HOW LONG IS THE TRIP?
The length of time at sea depends on the weather, sharks and number of clients on board. Trips are usually no more than 5 hours at sea.

DO I NEED TO BE A QUALIFIED DIVER?
No. Great white sharks are best observed using a simple breath holding technique. Exhaled scuba bubbles make a lot of noise and tend to scare the sharks away. Holding your breath has much lower impact on the shark’s environment and so ensures the best interactions. However if the conditions are suitable we can arrange for a ‘hooka’ system to be on board for qualified divers. This is at the discretion of the dive master. Scuba users will only enter the cage after all other breath holding
divers have been in the cage.

HOW MANY PEOPLE IN THE CAGE?
Our cage can comfortably take 5-6 people depending on their size!

HOW LONG WE I BE IN THE CAGE?
Duration of your dive depends on the behaviour of the sharks. We rotate the divers on a conveyor system to ensure that everyone on board gets a good interaction.

DO I HAVE TO DIVE?
You do not have to dive are welcome to stay dry and observe the sharks from the deck.

CAN I CHANGE MY MIND?
The price is the same for divers and non-divers. Therefore once we are out at sea you are welcome change your mind and dive!

WILL I GET SEA SICK!
If you are prone to motion sickness please take sea sickness pills (available from pharmacies) at least 1 hour before launch. Taking them on the boat will be too late!

WHAT IF I GET SEA SICK?
I you are really sick at sea we can arrange a shuttle boat to take you back to dry land. This is NOT included in our price as the service is independent of Shark Diving Unlimited. The cost will depend on how many other people take the taxi!

DO WE FEED THE SHARKS?
Great white shark cage diving operations are NOT permitted to intentionally feed great white sharks. Our crew are highly skilled at handling the bait line and do their utmost not to let the sharks take the bait. However on occasion the sharks do sneak in and steal the bait. Recent scientific studies have concluded that due to the low frequency of this occurring great white sharks do not become positively reinforced to associate boats with food. In fact there is evidence to support the argument that the sharks actually become negatively conditioned to the cage diving environment because of the high frequency of times that they do not get fed.

CAN I DO ANY OTHER SCUBA DIVING?
Shark Diving Unlimited is the only PADI registered dive resort in Gansbaai. Therefore we can offer a range of other scuba dives including seal dives, kelp dives, reef dives and wreck diving. Please go to DYER ISLAND SCUBA DIVING for more details. To find out more about Shark Diving Unlimited’s exclusive PADI Great White Shark Distinctive Specailty course go to PADI COURSE or email mike@sharkdivingunlimited.com

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR?
We encounter great white sharks all year round. However during the winter months we sight a higher daily average of individual sharks, but we can experience bad weather, which may prevent us from going to sea. Our weather in the summer is better and sharks are still sighted almost every day. Please note that all trips are weather dependent and may be cancelled at short notice.
