Since its inception Shark Diving Unlimited has been involved in Marine Research. Mainly with the White Sharks, but also on with various other projects, and at the moment leading the field with its active field support on cutting edge research projects.
As a result of many requests, we had a long hard think how we could really offer an intern programme of value, incorporating thorough training and providing solid practical experience.
Apart from the “normal” shark tourism boats, we also have specific research vessels with our flagship being “Catalyst” a very well equipped 43 ft sailing catamaran.
Our programme is very different from the typical “volunteer” or “voluntourism” programmes offered elsewhere. The difference lies in time, commitment, training and experience. With us, you will spend more time and gain good qualifications and very worthwhile practical experience.
We require a serious commitment, and provide serious training in various fields leading to internationally recognized qualifications.
We call this our Intern Educational Programme, and we have two programmes.
1. The Basic Intern Educational Programme - minimum 2 month commitment.
2. The Marine Development Course - minimum 6 month commitment
The Basic Intern Educational Programme
This programme covers basic seamanship, how to crew and operate a power boat, learning how to crew a sailing yacht. If you do not dive yet, we will teach you how to dive up to at least advanced level as well as the basics of scientific diving. The Marine Ecology and White Shark courses that you will do are recognized by international diver training agencies.
Practical experience will include working on most of our vessels, including crewing Catalyst and working with researchers. Certifications will include STCW 95, Powerboat skipper, Competent yacht crew, and Scuba diving. This programme can be extended should you wish to stay and work here longer.
The Marine Development Course
The Marine Development Course requires at least a 6 month commitment, and is the ideal skills development course if you want to work in the marine environment. It includes everything offered on the Basic Intern Education Programme, and a whole lot more.
It is a perfect gap year course, and will equip you not only with an excellent skill set, and qualifications, but also experience that will help you land the job that you want.
The course includes STCW 95 ( required to work on yachts, super yachts and ships) as well as power boat skipper , yacht skipper, dive master and nature guide.
You will work on research projects, crew and sail on our yacht, crew , learn how to take a power boat through surf, and do some magic dives.
The qualifications and experience that you earn will lead to a definite advantage in the pursuit of a career in this field.
Both of these programmes require a serious commitment, and earning qualifications and certifications means working hard and meeting standards.
These programmes are ideally suited to young people that are interested in the ocean and marine life.
