Have you seen the pictures
of the new boat?! What an incredible time the crew has had with their
new toy! 12m long, 6-man cage, 33 knots, huge observation deck and more
space than you can shake a stick at. Barracuda is truly an awesome boat!
The best thing about the boat though, is that the sharks don’t seem to
be phased at all. Ever confident, the sharks seem more than happy to
approach, just as they did with the smaller boat. Even the larger cage
has not bothered them. The crew and clients are seeing great sharks at
the moment. A five and a half meter female was reported recently, during
a spell of seeing mostly males. |

The sharks are moving around the Dyer Island area, with a few wandering
off to patrol the sandy-bottomed shallows. On two separate occasions we
happened upon a shark cruising in clear water only a few meters deep,
just at the surf line by a sandy beach. Days before, a huge group of
Bottlenose dolphins were hunting there in spectacular style.
There were sharks a-plenty in Shark Alley
recently too. Clients were lucky enough to spot a shark that had just
caught a seal and was finishing up the leftovers.
Shark Diving Unlimited’s services were on
loan to Marine and Coastal Management this week. Some scientists from MCM
were in Gansbaai to try out a new tissue sampling technique. Along with
local shark researcher Michael Scholl, they boarded Barracuda with high
hopes. Unfortunately, the technique requires a little bit of polishing
before it is ready. This was one of many occasions that the government body,
MCM, have chosen to use the experience and knowledge of the Shark Diving
Unlimited crew.
The sea has been stunning lately, and long sunny days have added to
everyone’s enjoyment. Sun, sea and sharks in South Africa.
